What is FMSEA?

Florida Marine Science Educators Association

Membership Information

FMSEA (Florida Marine Science Educators Association), founded in 1968 is a professional association of individuals and organizations devoted to the cause of marine education in Florida. FMSEA provides a network for marine educators working together to coordinate and expand marine education, communication and interaction.

FMSEA is a regional chapter of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), an organization that brings together those interested in the study and enjoyment of the world of water, both fresh and salt. FMSEA is also affiliated with LEEF, The League of Environmental Educators of Florida. The FMSEA board of directors consists of elected officers, elected regional directors and a newsletter editor.

FMSEA publishes the "Littoral Drift", a quarterly newsletter which contains information about educational workshop and conferences, teaching aids and resources, regional activities and events, field trip sites, and other articles of interest. Regional workshops and the annual spring conference are offered in locations throughout the state and provide opportunities for members to visit the diverse marine ecosystems of Florida.

FMSEA sponsors an annual Student Project Award for elementary, middle and high school students to encourage the awareness of the importance of Florida's marine resources and a Teacher Scholarship Trust Fund to assist with continued professional development for educators. In conjunction with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, FMSEA conducts Marine Collecting Certification Workshops throughout the state. Participants learn environmental regulation, collecting techniques, develop a rationale for using marine organisms in the classroom, explore other options and investigate and develop activities for using collected organisms in a appropriate manner.
